The Impaler and Assistant

I created this new series of photographs using the original tintype process which involves coating aluminum plates with photographic emulsion, exposing the plates directly through a large format camera, then immediately developing the images in a darkroom. This process creates direct positive images on the plates so each image is one of a kind without any method of reproducing it like standard photographs that are created with a negative.

These images were carefully staged by producing large paper cut outs of the design elements I use in my paintings to hang behind the models that were styled to refer to various circus sideshow freaks and performers including The Illustrated Woman, Sword Swallower, Knife Thrower, Contortionist, and The Bearded Lady to name a few.
